Protecting cetaceans from Acoustic Deterrent Devices used in fish farms

In 2020, Guy has also acted for a number of members of the Coastal Communities Network in Scotland in relation to the use of acoustic deterrent devices on fish farms used to scare seals.  These ADDs also disturb and harm cetaceans and, without the benefit of a European Protected Species licence issued pursuant to the Habitats Regulations, their use is illegal.  The evidence suggests that stronger netting, seal blinds and other such devices are a reasonable alternative to using ADDs and that they should not be used in Scotland.
