Government forced to back down over manure spreading

In March 2022, Defra published guidance for the Environment Agency in relation to the Farming Rules for Water (the 2018 Regulations), which undermined the regulations and downplayed the dangers of inappropriate spreading of manure, leading to pollution and damage to rivers.

Acting for S&TC, Guy issued a formal letter before action to the Secretary of State and, following an exchange of correspondence, Defra backed down and altered the guidance to make it clear that the 2018 Regulations cannot be ignored.
