In January 2011, acting for the owners of the Ullapool River in Wester Ross, Guy Linley-Adams submitted a formal complaint to the European Commission, running to over 80 pages and detailing the failure of the UK Government (acting through the Scottish Government) to designate an appropriate number of west coast Scottish rivers as Special Areas for Conservation for the protection of wild Atlantic salmon under the EC Habitats Directive.
The complaint also details the threats to the two existing Special Areas for Conservation for Atlantic salmon within the area of production of Scottish salmon farming and the failure of the Scottish Government to get to grips with the salmon-farming industry to provide proper protection for the iconic wild Atlantic salmon and sea trout of the west coast and western isles.
